夫天地者，萬物之逆旅。光陰者，百代之過客。而浮生若夢，為歡幾何？古人秉燭夜游，良有以也。況陽春召我以煙景，大塊假我以文章。會桃李之芳園，序天倫之 樂事。群季俊秀，皆為惠連1；吾人詠歌，獨慚康樂2。幽賞未已，高談轉清。開瓊筵以坐花，飛羽觴而醉月。不有佳作，何伸雅懷？如詩不成，罰依金谷酒數。

Well, the sky and earth is the inn of all the things.  Time is a passer-by through millenniums.  And the floating life is like a dream.  How much pleasure can we indulge in?  It is right and reasonable for the ancient people to roam at night with a candle in the hand.  And now Spring shows me the misty scenes and Nature gives me beautiful pictures.  We meet in the fragrant Peach and Plum Garden and are enjoying the happiness of family union. All my brothers are handsome and learned like Weilian1, but as I chant poems, I feel ashamed in comparison with Kangle2.  The silent enjoyment doesn’t end yet, and our loud chatting becomes quiet. We hold the feast among flowers and lift cups and get drunk under the moon. If we don’t write poems for the occasion, how can we express our poetic emotions? Whoever can’t compose a poem will have the penalty to drink wine to the number adopted in Jin Gu Garden3.

天地是万事万物的旅舍，光阴是古往今来的过客。而人生浮泛，如梦一般，能有几多欢乐？古人持烛夜游，确实有道理啊。况且温煦的春天用艳丽的景色召唤我们，大自然将美好的文章提供给我们。于是相会于美丽的桃李园内，叙说兄弟团聚的快乐。诸位弟弟英俊秀发，个个好比谢惠连；而我的作诗吟咏，却惭愧不如谢康乐。正以幽雅的情趣欣赏着美景，高远的谈吐已更为清妙。铺开盛席，坐在花间；行酒如飞，醉于月下。不作好诗，怎能抒发高雅的情怀？如赋诗不成，须依金谷雅集三斗之数行罚。

  〔1〕逆旅：旅舍。逆；迎。古人以生为寄，以死为归，如《尸子》：“老莱子曰：人生于天地之间，寄也；寄者固归也。”又如《古诗》：“人生天地间，忽如远行客。”此用其意。〔2〕浮生若梦：《庄子·刻意》：“其生若浮，其死若休。”又《庄子·齐物论》称庄周梦为胡蝶；“不知周之梦为胡蝶与，胡蝶之梦为周与？”意谓死生之辨，亦如梦觉之分，纷纭变化，不可究诘。此用其意。〔3〕秉：持，拿着。二句原出曹丕《与吴质书》：“年一过往，何可攀援？古人思秉烛夜游，良有以也。”〔4〕大块：指大自然。假：借。文章：原指错杂的色彩、花纹。此指大自然中各种美好的形象、色彩、声音等。刘勰《文心雕龙·原道》指出，天上日月，地上山川，以及动物、植物等，均有文采，“形立则章成矣，声发则文生矣”。〔5〕序：同叙。天伦：天然的伦次，此指兄弟。〔6〕季：少子为季，此指弟弟。惠连：谢惠连，南朝宋文学家。幼而聪慧，十岁便能作文。深为族兄灵运所赏爱，常一同写作游玩。〔7〕康乐：谢灵运，南朝宋诗人，名将谢玄之孙，袭封康乐公。以写作山水诗著名。〔8〕琼筵：美好的筵席。琼，美玉。羽觞：酒器，形如雀鸟。〔9〕金谷酒数：晋石崇有金谷园，曾与友人宴饮其中，作《金谷诗序》云：“遂各赋诗，以叙中怀。或不能者，罚酒三斗。”

"is" or "are"?

2.  It is right and reasonable for the ancient people to roam at night with a candle in the hand.

do "candle" and "hand"  need to be in plurals?

3. 惠连: Weilian, in Shanghainese, yes; but in mandarin, "Huilian" ?

1﹐這種主語如果看作一個整體﹐就是單數。如名詞FAMILY﹐可單可複。
2﹐幾個人也只需一根蠟燭﹐所以不必用複數。HAND前用THE﹐用作物類名詞﹐不需
複數。of course, if you use plural, they are also correct.
3﹐我的國語很差。以後改一下。
