Guarding the Wheat Field
By Yuntian
The living are travelers
The dead are returning home
--- Li Bai
It was the time when gentle breeze blew by the ferry and warm mist rose above the wheat field
Yet you wouldn’t wait until May to see the golden waves rolling
Clouds dizzily whirled like sunflowers up in the heaven
where facing the sea the spring flowers forever bloom
where Ahl’s sun shines and nine beautiful villages cast their charming eyes of autumn waves to your sad heart
At the junction of mountain and sea, the latitude and longitude weaved by sorrow and joy finally met,
And paved into silent railway tracks that stretched endlessly
Over rivers and hills, through wind and snow, your tired feet came to a rest
Lying on the shadow of sunset, you let go of all your sufferings and dreams
which would lie forever in the faraway wheat field by the river in your hometown
Upon the roaring wind, the sobbing tracks rose into a ladder to heaven
You walked away, not turning back to the mundane world anymore
Swallows flying, a man departing
The spring rain weeps and waters the field
Where your lonely and passionate poems grow along with wheat seedlings
Oh, I almost forgot, you shall not feel lonely now
For your thin elder brother must be standing next to you guarding the wheat field
With his life he painted, with your life you wrote
That was the only way you both knew
You faded into the sunset long ago and I can’t see you anymore
But now in March’s wheat field, the poems you left behind are reviving,
Walking toward me and holding flowers of burning flames
Lowering my head, holding back my tears, quietly I listen to your soul talking out loud
