The Love Song of Monterey
In the raging fire of the War.
A POW was thrown into bondage
Locked up on a base in California
His life was dull and meaningless
Kindly the authority granted
Host family weekends for POWs
Through the maze of Italian kins
He found a stranger's family
All he cared was a good meal
And none like a romantic deal
Yet there was a curious pretty girl
Who came to see this enemy POW
At first sight they fell in love
At the second none wanted to part
At the third they promised secret dates
At the fourth they vowed a life of union
Taking the stranger's land as hometown
The POW now feared the end of war
Sent back to the land of Ancient Rome
He wrote hundreds of love letters
Finally they tied the knot in Italy
And returned as a married couple
Into fishing they worked hard
And brought up three children
Ocean depleted, he turned to construction
The boat laid aside, the net went dry
They laboriously served the community
With their wonderful cooking
Time passed without one knew it
The wife left before the man
Heart broken was the left behind
He followed within two years
Now in the same bed they rest
Distantly the city traffic they hear
The love song of their harmony
Is still sang around Monterey
