An Untold History of Monterey’s Chinese Fishermen
Produced at

(TAT)
California State University, Monterey Bay
Among the residents and visitors of the Monterey Bay Area, very few know of the vivid and multicultural history that has shaped the region. The story of the Chinese who pioneered commercial fishing, and who made enormous contributions to the economy of the Monterey Bay in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, is largely unknown and untold.
Geraldine Low-Sabado, who is a direct descendent of the first Chinese fishermen, is one of the few left in the area who has a tie to these early immigrants. Now she is on a mission to learn about and make others aware of the amazing contributions her family and other Chinese made in shaping the Monterey Bay Area.
