what is "splitting" exactly? one bee becomes three bees? Or a birth rate? I thought the loss included the birth rate
Then what was the normal turn over rate before this phenomenon appeared?

no. most likely due to pesticides, combined with parasites (varroa, nosema), loss of habitat, and bad nutrition. combined factors.

no. beekeepers increase the colonies by "splitting" them...one can become 3 in a good year. thus the total would remain the same but this cost money (I paid $81 for each 3 lbs of bees in the spring) and also put stress on existing bees.

so we have been losing 35% each year but the total pop remains the same, it might not be sustainable in the long run.

If your data is correct, losing 30% each year since 2006, we have only (1-0.3) to the 7th power, which is 0.082, about 8.2% bees left. That's way too scary
