Stonehedge Reserve 2007
Winemaker Jon Alexander-Hills Notes
The 2007 Stonehedge Napa Valley Merlot is produced exclusively from mountian top hillsides of Napa Valley. Grown in desolate rocky soil in high altitudes, the vines are naturally stressed into yielding a very limited amount of grapes with intense flavor concentration. Elegant and smooth, yet boldly packed with layer upon layer of ripe cherry berry plummy flavors and a finish that never quits. Built to last. This wine can be enjoyed now or develop further complexities by addional cellaring.

Blackstone 2008
Varietal: Merlot (78% Merlot; 11% Syrah; 6% Tannat; 4% Petite Sirah; 1% Cabernet Sauvignon)
Region: California – USA
Cost: $10 (SRP)
Ruby red in color with aromas of violets and bright raspberries. Flavors of plums, cherries, and blackberry with a long finish. Pairs well with spiced lamb chops, pasta salad, and roasted chicken.
Recommendations: If you’ve been following this site for a while now, you know of my decision to give Merlot another try, having had some bad experiences with it in the past, but having recently found some that I enjoyed. Because of that, I was happy when some samples for Blackstone included a bottle of Merlot to help me on the path to acceptance.
The wine was a dark ruby color in the glass, very definitely red without any real hints of purple. On the nose I got raspberry and a hint of tartness which was then carried through to the palate where it reminded both my wife and I of just under-ripe cherries. I was pleased with the nice smooth finish though, which was impressive given the 13.5% alc/vol (not high, but not low either).
My wife and I paired the wine with a dinner of herb baked chicken and some butter noodles. Originally the chicken was supposed to go on the grill, but my grill was out of propane, so an adjustment had to be made. While the wine went well with the chicken, I felt as though the pairing could have benefited from the addition of some grilled flavor, and if you grab this wine and are trying to decide how to cook your chicken, I say grill it.
Merlot was one of those grapes that I had long said was the exception to my rule: With Merlot you got what you paid for. However, with the 2008 Blackstone Merlot I may have to revise that as for $10 it’s a great value and was an enjoyable bottle of wine. If you’re like me and are looking to give Merlot another chance, this is a good bottle to get started on as if it just doesn’t suit your palate, you’re only out $10.
If you can’t find the Blackstone Merlot near you, you can always go online here and pick up a bottle to enjoy.

Auguste 2009
2009 Chateau Auguste Bordeaux Merlot
September 13, 2011 by Dave
The 2009 Chateau Auguste Merlot is something of a rarity for Bordeaux Red wines, it is a 100% single varietal Merlot and most Bordeaux wines are blends. Chateau Auguste is located south of St.-Emilion (Right Bank), which is primarily a Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc growing area. The Chateau Auguste vineyards are certified organic by ECOCERT and this wine is designated a Bordeaux wine which is the most basic designation for the region. It is imported by Trader Joe’s and sells for $7.99. The alcohol content is 13.5%.
The color is a crystalline purple with a watery halo. The nose is blackberry and raspberry, a little flowery perfume and bacon grease. Medium bodied, this is a wine with balance, good juicy dark berries are met with firm, but not intrusive tannins and there is a nice licorice and Dr. Pepper thing happening under the fruit. A bright wine with good acidity and a quality long lasting finish. The Chateau Auguste Merlot is a French wine, it is not like the fruit forward Merlots you get from California, balance and length are the prized virtues here.
8 bucks for a certified organic Merlot from the Right Bank in Bordeaux is a heck of a deal. The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux is such a good vintage that even the producers that never make interesting wines, couldn’t help from bottling something decent. Usually cheap Bordeaux is never as good as cheap Spanish or South American wine, but if the vintage is 2009 or 2010 take a chance on a bottle, in a great vintage even the wines on the bottom end can give a lot of bang for the buck.

Wild Horse 2008
2008 Wild Horse Merlot Paso Robles
Wild Horse makes its Merlot from Paso Robles, where vineyards west of the Santa Maria River contribute rich, ripe tannins and sites to the east provide a different array of aromas and flavors. When the fermented juice is blended together and aged for a year in a mix of French and Hungarian oak, the result is a wine full of spicy black and red fruit flavors enhanced by delightful acidity. Soft but structured tannins make this very enjoyable, easy-drinking wine one to look forward to for tomorrow’s dinner or for dinner sometime in 2015.

Ravenswood 1999
Ravenswood Vintners Blend California Merlot, 1999
Pros:Ready to drink now, inexpensive, soft on the palate, round finish.
Cons:None, really. An excellent performer.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this blended Merlot to anyone entertaining on a budget. This is a soft, elegant wine with a lot of character for less than $10 per bottle.
Interested in the 1997 Ravenswood Vintner's Blend California Merlot? Well, good luck finding it. The Ravenswood Vintner's Blend wine that is in current release is vintage 1999. So, then, I write here about the wine you are most likely to find at your local wine shop.
"No Wimpy Wines" -- that's the battle cry of Ravenswood Wine, located in Sonoma, California. This is a winery that has made its name in California as a producer of big Zinfandel wines. Indeed, most all of the wines that Ravenswood produces are red wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Zinfandel. The winery does produce some Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines; I just haven't seen them on store shelves, though.
Ravenswood has built its reputation on powerful, hand-crafted wines that should be aged seven to ten years before reaching their prime. Some wines, like their Vintners Blend series, are blended to produce a wine that is ready for consumption as soon as it is bottled. Such is the case with the 1999 Ravenswood Vintners Blend California Merlot.
Ravenswood Vintners Blend Merlot
--------------------------------------------------
As previously stated, this wine is produced by taking a Merlot wine that Ravenswood vints itself and blending this said wine with wines vinted by others. So, then, the success of this wine is dependent upon several factors: the success of Ravenswood in producing its portion of the wine, the success of other producers who vint wine that Ravenswood purchases for its blend, and the success of the winemaker in blending all of these various wines to produce a wine with character and flavor.
This 13.5% alcohol by volume Merlot pours with a deep garnet/ruby color and presents a nose of ripe cherries and blackberries. Ravenswood claims that a major portion of the wine was "aged in French oak for eight months to add complexity and structure to the rather opulent fruit characteristics of the Merlot grapes." I can testify that both in the nose and in the mouth, there is a subtle oak/vanilla tone to the wine. And what is most pleasing: the wood presence is indeed very subtle and unobtrusive. Just enough toasted flavor is presented to "stamp" with wine with an oak signature, but not so much as to make one wince and pull splinters from the lips.
In flavor, I found this wine to be well balanced and very easy on the palate, exhibiting great fruit flavor and some plum and some very light tobacco tones. Having tried a goodly number of wines in the past months, this wine stands out as an excellent performer. Full of dark fruit flavor, very gentle in tannins, full in the mouth, soft and round in finish, and ready to drink right now.
Price and Availability
--------------------------------------------------
My wife purchased this wine for $8.99 (plus tax) at Cost Plus World Markets. At an under $10 per bottle price, this is an excellent wine for the money.
Also available at Beverages and More (www.bevmo.com) for $9.99 per 750 ml bottle. Ravenswood produces around 400,000 cases of wine per year.
Recommendations
--------------------------------------------------
This wine is ready to drink now. And that's an important consideration, really, if you are entertaining. Why pay a premium price for a wine that needs five years of cellar aging to reach its prime when you can serve a value-priced, great tasting wine that everyone agrees taste perfect today?
My wife and I enjoyed this wine with our dinner last night: grilled rib-eye steaks, fried potatoes, and... for dessert... homemade brownies. Merlot wine and fresh brownies... now that's dessert!
