And an orator said, "Speak to us of Freedom."
一个演说者说,“给我们讲讲自由吧。”

And he answered:
他回答道:

At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom,
Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them.
在城门前和你们的炉火旁,我看见你们膜拜自己的自由。
就如奴隶在暴君面前卑躬屈膝,并且奉承他,虽然他杀戮他们。  (谢老瓦提醒。)

Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.
唉,在庙宇的丛林中,在城堡的阴影里,我看到过你们当中最自由的人把自由当做羁轭和手铐戴着。

And my heart bled within me; for you can only be free when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you, and when you cease to speak of freedom as a goal and a fulfillment.
我的心在体内流血;因为,只有当追求自由的愿望就成为你们的束缚,当你们不再认为自由就是目标和成就时,你们才会自由。

You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.
当忧虑弥漫你的白昼,需求与痛苦笼罩你的夜晚,当这些事成为你们生活的羁绊,你们却赤身裸体毫无约束地超脱出来时,你们才真正获得自由。

And how shall you rise beyond your days and nights unless you break the chains which you at the dawn of your understanding have fastened around your noon hour?
你们若不在智慧的清晨砸断你们系在正午的锁链,你们又怎能超越你们的白昼与黑夜?

In truth that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle the eyes.
And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard that you may become free?
事实上,你们所称的自由是这些链子中最坚固的一环,虽然它在阳光下闪烁耀眼。
你们为获得自由而要抛弃的,不就是一些自我的碎片吗?

If it is an unjust law you would abolish, that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead.
You cannot erase it by burning your law books nor by washing the foreheads of your judges, though you pour the sea upon them.
如果你们要废除的是不公正的法律,而法律是你们曾亲手写在自己的额上的。
焚烧你们的法律书,用海水洗濯法官的额头,对废除法律都无济于事,即使你们把海水都泼上去。

And if it is a despot you would dethrone, see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.
For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud, but for a tyranny in their own freedom and a shame in their own pride?
如果你们要推翻君王,先要确定他在你们心中的王位已被摧毁。
因为,除非是自由中的暴政,骄傲中的耻辱, 否则,一个暴君又如何能统治自由和骄傲的人们?  

And if it is a care you would cast off, that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.
如果你们要抛掉的是烦恼,那么,是你们选择了烦恼,而不是别人给你们的。

And if it is a fear you would dispel, the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.
如果你们要驱逐的是恐惧,那么,恐惧居住在你们心中,而不是在你们惧怕的人手中。

Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace, the desired and the dreaded, the repugnant and the cherished, the pursued and that which you would escape.
其实,所有这些总在你们身体中若即若离地漂游,渴望的,恐惧的,厌恶的,珍视的,追求的,和躲避的。

These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.
它们在你们身体中游弋,就如光影成双成对,(步步相随)亦步亦趋 。(谢老瓦好词)

And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.
当影子遁去时,徘徊的光成为另一束光的影子。

And thus your freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself the fetter of a greater freedom.
因此,当你们的自由挣脱它的脚镣时,它成为更大自由的脚镣。

快手云出手就是快,不惜偷工减料的快哈;)第二句怎么就漏掉了?

"in constant half embrace" ,翻译成若即若离,很贴切!

“就如光影成双成对,步步相随”, 似可改为“就如光影成双成对,亦步亦趋”?

觉得有些词用的过重(当然也是汉语本身的缺陷),比如: unbeautiful = 丑陋,或者”不尽人意“? unclean = 卑鄙, 或者”不净之人”?

a fetter and a fouling of the mind = “胡思杂念”?

翻圣经中英对照版本,还真看到“不洁净的”这种讲法, 与你所说”不净之人”类似。 :)

    自由岂不是你们自身的碎片?你们愿意将它抛弃换得自由么?

    假如那是你们所要废除的一条不公平的法律,那法律却是你们用自己的手写在自己的额上的。

    你们虽烧毁你们的律书,倾全海的水来冲洗你们法官的额,也不能把它抹掉。

    假如那是个你们所要废黜的暴君,先看他的建立在你心中的宝座是否毁坏。

    因为一个暴君怎能辖制自由和自尊的人呢?除非他们自己的自由是专制的,他们的自尊是可羞的。

    假如那是一种你们所要抛掷的牵挂,那牵挂是你自取的,不是别人勉强给你的。

假如那是一种你们所要消灭的恐怖,那恐怖的座位是在你的心中,而不在你所恐怖的人的手里。



    真的,一切在你里面运行的事物,愿望与恐怖,憎恶与爱怜,追求与退避,都是永恒地互抱着。

    这些事物在你里面运行,如同光明与黑影成对地胶粘着。

    当黑影消灭的时候,遗留的光明又变成另一种光明的黑影。

这样,当你们的自由脱去他的镣铐的时候,他本身又变成更大的自由的镣铐了。

理智与感情

And the priestess spoke again and said: "Speak to us of Reason and Passion."
女祭司再度开口,说道:“给我们讲讲理智与感情吧。”

And he answered saying:

Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against passion and your appetite.
你们的灵魂时常是战场,理智与判断在那里同感情与欲望较量。

Would that I could be the peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
但愿我可以成为你们灵魂的调停人,将你们自身的纷争与对抗化做统一和谐的旋律。

But how shall I, unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers, nay, the lovers of all your elements?
但我怎能做到呢?除非你们自己也做调停人,不仅如此,你们要热爱你们灵魂中的一切。

Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.
If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.
你们的理智与感情是你们航行在海上的灵魂的舵与帆。
假如帆或舵中的任何一个损坏了,你们只能随波逐流,或者在大海中停滞不前。

For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.
理智独自支配,是一股控制的力量;而感情,不加留意,则会成为毁灭自己的烈焰。

Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion; that it may sing;
And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.
因此,让你们的灵魂超越理智,上升到感情的高度;使它歌唱;
让你们的灵魂用理智引导感情,使你们的感情能够每日复活,一如从灰烬中升起的凤凰。

I would have you consider your judgment and your appetite even as you would two loved guests in your house.
我希望你们斟酌你们的判断与欲望,就象对待家中的两位嘉宾。

Surely you would not honour one guest above the other; for he who is more mindful of one loses the love and the faith of both.
你们当然不应当对两个客人有所偏颇;因为,对其中一人关心过分,反而会失去他们两人的爱与信念。

Among the hills, when you sit in the cool shade of the white poplars, sharing the peace and serenity of distant fields and meadows - then let your heart say in silence, "God rests in reason."
在群山之间,当你坐在白杨树的凉荫下,享受远方田野与草甸的祥和宁静时----让你的心默默说,“上帝在理智中休憩。”

And when the storm comes, and the mighty wind shakes the forest, and thunder and lightning proclaim the majesty of the sky, - then let your heart say in awe, "God moves in passion."
当风暴降临,狂风摇撼森林,电闪雷鸣宣告天空的权威,--- 让你的心敬畏地说,“上帝在感情中穿行。”

And since you are a breath In God's sphere, and a leaf in God's forest, you too should rest in reason and move in passion.
既然你是上帝领地上的一缕气息,上帝森林里的一片树叶,那么,你也当在理智中休憩,在感情中穿行。

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
你的痛苦打破束缚你理解的外壳。

Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.
即使果核必须砸开,核仁会站在太阳下,因此你必须知道痛苦。

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.

苦痛

Your friend is your needs answered.
你的朋友是对你的需求的回应。

He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
他是你的田野,你用爱心播种,用感激收获。

And he is your board and your fireside.
他是你的饮食与炉火。

For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
你饥饿时去找他,在他那里寻求安宁。

When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay“.
你的朋友直抒胸臆时,你心里别怕说“不”,但你也不要保留“是”字。

And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
他沉默时,你的心不要停止聆听他的心;
因为,无需言语,在友谊中,一切思想,一切愿望,一切期待都在默默的欢乐中诞生并分享。

When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.

And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.

For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide?

你该到哪里去寻求美丽呢?除非美丽本身就是你的道路同你的向导,否则你又如何找得到她呢?

And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?

除非美丽编织你的言语,否则你又如何谈论她?

The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle.
Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."

悲哀与受伤的人说,“美丽是善良与温柔,
她走在我们当中,象一个年轻的母亲,对自己的华丽半含娇羞。“

And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread.
Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."

就象狂风暴雨,她摇动我们脚下的大地,震撼我们头顶的天空。“

The tired and the weary say, "beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit.

The Ambitious Violet
Kahlil Gibran


There was a beautiful and fragrant violet who lived placidly amongst her friends, and swayed happily amidst the other flowers in a solitary garden. One morning, as her crown was embellished with beads of dew, she lifted her head and looked about; she saw a tall and handsome rose standing proudly and reaching high into space, like a burning torch upon an emerald lamp.

The violet opened her blue lips and said, "What an unfortunate am I among these flowers, and how humble is the position I occupy in their presence! Nature has fashioned me to be short and poor.... I live very close to the earth and I cannot raise my head toward the blue sky, or turn my face to the sun, as the roses do."

And the rose heard her neighbor's words; she laughed and commented, "How strange is your talk! You are fortunate, and yet you cannot understand your fortune. Nature has bestowed upon you fragrance and beauty which she did not grant to any other... Cast aside your thoughts and be contended, and remember that he who humbles himself will be exalted, and he who exalts himself will be crushed."

The violet answered, "You are consoling me because you have that I craved.... You seek to embitter me with the meaning that you are great.... How painful is the preaching of the fortunate to the heart of the miserable! And how severe is the strong when he stands as advisor among the weak!"

And Nature heard the conversation of the violet and the rose; she approached and said, "What has happened to you, my daughter violet? You have been humble and sweet in all your deeds and words. Has greed entered your heart and numbed your senses?" In a pleading voice, the violet answered her, saying, "Oh great and merciful mother, full of love and sympathy, I beg you, with all my heart and soul, to grant my request and allow me to be a rose for one day."

And Nature responded, "you know not what you are seeking; you are unaware of the concealed disaster behind your blind ambition. If you were a rose you would be sorry, and repentance would avail you but naught." The violet insisted, "Change me into a tall rose, for I wish to lift my head high with pride; and regardless of my fate, it will be my own doing." Nature yielded, saying, "Oh ignorant and rebellious violet, I will grant your request. But if calamity befalls you, your complaint must be to yourself."

And Nature stretched forth her mysterious and magic finger and touched the roots of the violet, who immediately turned into a tall rose; rising above all other flowers in the garden.

At eventide the sky became thick with black clouds, and the raging elements disturbed the silence of existence with thunder, and commenced to attack the garden, sending forth a great rain and strong winds. The tempest tore the branches and uprooted the plants and broke the stems of the tall flowers, sparing only the little ones who grew close to the friendly earth. That solitary garden suffered greatly from the belligerent skies, and when the storm calmed and the sky cleared, all the flowers were laid waste and none of them had escaped the wrath of Nature except the clan of small violets, hiding by the wall of the garden.

Having lifted her head and viewed the tragedy of the flowers and trees, one of the violet maidens smiled happily and called to here companions, saying, "See what the tempest has done to the haughty flowers!" Another violet said, "We are small, and live close to the earth, but we are safe from the wrath of the skies." And a third one added, "Because we are poor in height the tempest is unable to subdue us."

At that moment the queen of violets saw by her side the converted violet, hurled to earth by the storm and distorted upon the wet grass like a limp soldier in a battle field. The queen of the violets lifted her head and called to her family, saying, "Look, my daughters, and meditate upon that which Greed has done to the violet who became a proud rose for one hour. Let the memory of this scene be a reminder of your good fortune."

And the dying rose moved and gathered the remnants of her strength, and quietly said, "You are contended and meek dullards; I have never feared the tempest. Yesterday I, too, was satisfied and contented with Life, but Contentment has acted as a barrier between my existence and the tempest of Life, confining me to a sickly and sluggish peace and tranquility of mind. I could have lived the same life you are living now by clinging with fear to the earth.... I could have waited for winter to shroud me with snow and deliver me to Death, who will surely claim all violets.... I am happy now because I have probed outside my little world into the mystery of the Universe.... something which you have not yet done. I could have overlooked Greed, whose nature is higher than mine, but as I hearkened to the silence of the night, I heard the heavenly world talking to this earthly world, saying, 'Ambition beyond existence is the essential purpose of our being.' At that moment my spirit revolted and my heart longed for a position higher than my limited existence. I realized that the abyss cannot hear the song of the stars, and at that moment I commenced fighting against my smallness and craving for that which did not belong to me, until my rebelliousness turned into a great power, and my longing into a creating will.... Nature, who is the great object of our deeper dreams, granted my request and changed me into a rose with her magic fingers."

The rose became silent for a moment, and in a weakening voice, mingled with pride and achievement, she said, "I have lived one hour as a proud rose; I have existed for a time like a queen; I have looked at the Universe from behind the eyes of the rose; I have heard the whisper of the firmament through the ears of the rose and touched the folds of Light's garment with rose petals. Is there any here who can claim such honor?" Having this spoken, she lowered her head, and with a choking voice he gasped, "I shall die now, for my souls has attained its goal. I have finally extended my knowledge to a world beyond the narrow cavern of my birth. This is the design of Life.... This is the secret of Existence." Then the rose quivered, slowly folded her petals, and breathed her last with a heavenly smile upon her lips... a smile of fulfillment of hope and purpose in Life... a smile of victory... a God's smile.

《虚荣的紫罗兰》

幽静的花园里,生长着一棵紫罗兰。她有美丽的小眼睛和娇嫩的花瓣。她生活在女伴们中间,满足于自己的娇小,在密密的草丛中愉快地摆来摆去。
  
一天早晨,她抬起顶着用露珠缀成的王冠的头,环顾四周,她发现一株亭亭玉立的玫瑰,那么雍容而英挺,使人联想起绿宝石的烛台托着鲜红的小火舌。

紫罗兰张开自己天蓝色的小嘴,叹了一口气,说:"在香喷喷的草丛里,我是多么不显眼啊,在别的花中间,我几乎不被人看见。造化把我造得这般渺小可怜。我紧贴着地面生长,无力地向蓝色的苍穹,无力把面庞转向太阳,像玫瑰花那样。"

玫瑰花听到她身旁的紫罗兰的这番话,笑得颤动了一下,接着说:"你这枝花多么愚蠢呵!你简直不理解自己的幸福,造化把很少赋予别类花朵的那种美貌、那种芬芳和娇嫩给予了你。抛弃你那些错误的想法和空洞的幻想,满足于自己的命运吧,要知道,温顺会使他变得坚强,谁要求过多,谁就会失去一切。"

紫罗兰回答道:"呵,玫瑰花,你来安慰我,因为在我只能幻想的那一切,你都有了。你是那样美好,所以你用聪明的词令粉饰我的渺小。但是对于不幸者说,那些幸福者的安慰意味着什么呢?向弱者说教的强者总是残酷的!"造化听到玫瑰与紫罗兰的对话,觉得奇怪,于是高声问:"呵,女儿,你怎么了,我的紫罗兰?我知道你一向谦逊而有耐心,你温柔而又驯顺,你安贫而又高尚。难道你被空虚的愿望和无谓的骄傲制服了?"

紫罗兰用充满哀求的声调回答她:"呵,你原是无上全能、悲悯万物的啊,我的母亲!我怀着满腔激情、满腔希望请求你,答应我的要求,把我变成玫瑰花吧,哪怕只一天也好!"

造化说:"你不知道你请求的是什么。你不明白外表的华丽暗藏着不可预期的灾祸。当我把你的躯干抽长,改变了你的容貌,使你变成了玫瑰花,你会后悔的,可是,到那时,后悔也无济于事了。"

紫罗兰答道:"呵,把我变作玫瑰花吧!变作一株高高的玫瑰花,骄傲地抬着头!日后不论发生什么事,都由我自己担承!"

于是,造化说:"呵,愚蠢而不听话的紫罗兰,我满足你的愿望!但是,如果不幸和灾祸突然降落在你的头上,那是你自己的过错!" 造化伸开她那看不见的魔指,触了一下紫罗兰的根--转瞬间紫罗兰变成了盛开的玫瑰,伫立在众芳之上。

午后,天边突然乌云密布,卷起旋风,雷电交加,隆隆作响,狂风和暴雨所组成一支不计其数的大军突然向园林袭来;他们的袭击折断了树枝,扭弯了花茎,把傲慢的花朵连根拔起。花园里除了那些紧贴着地面生长或是隐藏在岩石缝里的花草之外,什么也不剩了。而那座幽静的花园遭到了比其他花园更多的灾难。

等到风停云散,花儿全死去了,--她们像灰尘一样,满园零落,唯有躲在篱边的紫罗兰,在这场风暴的袭击之后,安然无恙。

一株紫罗兰抬起头来,看着花草树木的遭遇,愉快地微笑了一下,招呼自己的女伴:"瞧呵,暴风雨把那些自负为美的花朵变成了什么哟!" 另一株紫罗兰说:"我们紧贴着地面生长。我们才躲过了狂风暴雨的愤怒。" 第三株喊道:"我们是这般脆弱,但龙卷风并没有战胜我们!"

这时紫罗兰皇后向四周环顾了一下,突然看见昨天还是紫罗兰的那株玫瑰花。

暴风雨把她从土里拔起,狂风扫去了她的花瓣,把她抛在湿漉漉的青草上。她躺在地上,像一个被敌人的箭射中了的人一样。

紫罗兰皇后挺直了身子,展开自己的小叶片,招呼女伴们说:"看呵,看呵,我的女儿们!看看这株紫罗兰,为了能炫耀自己的美貌,她想变成一株玫瑰,哪怕是一小时也可以。就让眼前这景象作为你们的教训吧。"

濒死的玫瑰叹了一口气,集中了最后的力量,用微弱的声音回答道:"听我说吧,你们这些愚蠢而谦逊的花儿,听着吧,暴风雨和龙卷风都把你们吓坏了!昨天我也和你们一样,藏在绿油油的草丛里,满足于自己的命运。这种满足使我在生活的暴风雨里得到了庇护。我的整个存在的意义都包含在这种安全里,我从来不要求比这卑微的生存更多一点的宁静与享受。呵,我原是可以跟你们一样,紧贴着地面生长,等待冬季用雪把我盖上,然后偕同你们去接受那死亡与虚无的宁静。但是,只有当我不知道生活的奥妙,我才不能那样做,这种生活的奥妙,紫罗兰的族类是从来也不知道的。从前我可以抑制自己一切的愿望,不去想那些得天独厚的花儿。但是我倾听着夜的寂静,我听见更高的世界对我们世界说:‘生活的目的在于追求比生活更高更远的东西。'这时我的心灵就不禁反抗起自己来了。我的心殷切地盼望升到比自己更高的地方。终于,我反抗了自己,追求那些我不曾有过的东西,直到我的愤怒化成了力量,我的向往变成了创造的意志。到那时,我请求造化--你们要知道,造化,那不过是我们一种神秘的幻觉的反映,--我要求她把我变成玫瑰花。她这样作了。就像她常常用赏识和鼓励的手指变换自己的设计和素描一样!"

玫瑰花沉默了片刻,然后带着骄傲而优越的神情补充说:"我做了一小时的玫瑰花,我就像皇后一样度过了这一小时。我用玫瑰花的眼睛观察过宇宙。我用玫瑰花的耳朵倾听过以太的私语。我用玫瑰花的叶片感受过光的变幻。难道你们中间找得到一位,蒙受过这样的荣光么?" 玫瑰低下头,已经喘不上气来,说:"我就要死了。我要死了,但我内心里却有一种从来没有一株紫罗兰所体验过的感觉。我要死了,但是我知道,我所生存的那个有限的后面隐藏着的是什么。这就是生活的意义。这就是本质的所在,隐藏在无论是白天或夜晚的机缘之后的本质!"

玫瑰卷起自己的叶子,微微叹了一口气,死去了。她的脸上浮着超凡绝俗的微笑--那是理想实现的微笑,胜利的微笑,上帝的微笑。

Then said a teacher, "Speak to us of Teaching."

And he said:

No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of our knowledge.

The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.

If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.

The astronomer may speak to you of his understanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding.

The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm nor the voice that echoes it.

And he who is versed in the science of numbers can tell of the regions of weight and measure, but he cannot conduct you thither.

For the vision of one man lends not its wings to another man.

And even as each one of you stands alone in God's knowledge, so must each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God and in his understanding of the earth.

正如上帝对于你们每个人的了解都是不相同的,所以你们对于上帝和大地的见解也应当是不相同的。

You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts;
And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart you live in your lips, and sound is a diversion and a pastime.

And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered.
For thought is a bird of space, that in a cage of words many indeed unfold its wings but cannot fly.

There are those among you who seek the talkative through fear of being alone.
The silence of aloneness reveals to their eyes their naked selves and they would escape.

孤独的寂静向他们的眼睛显现他们裸露的自我,他们因而宁愿逃避。

And there are those who talk, and without knowledge or forethought reveal a truth which they themselves do not understand.

And there are those who have the truth within them, but they tell it not in words.
In the bosom of such as these the spirit dwells in rhythmic silence.
而且,有些人心中拥有真理,却不用言语表述。

When you meet your friend on the roadside or in the market place, let the spirit in you move your lips and direct your tongue.
Let the voice within your voice speak to the ear of his ear;
For his soul will keep the truth of your heart as the taste of the wine is remembered
When the color is forgotten and the vessel is no more.

当在路旁或市场里遇见你的朋友时,让你的精神开启你的双唇,引导你的喉舌。

    于是一个学者说,请你讲讲谈话。
    他回答说:
    在你不安于你的思想的时候,你就说话。
    在你不能再在你心的孤寂中生活的时候,你就要在你的唇上生活,而声音是一种消遣,一种娱乐。
    在你许多的谈话里,思想半受残害。
    思想是天空中的鸟,在语言的笼里,也许会展翅,却不会飞翔。
    你们中间有许多人,因为怕静,就去找多话的人。
    在独居的寂静里,会在他们眼中呈现出他们赤裸的自己,他们就想逃避。
    也有些说话的人,并没有知识和考虑,却要启示一种他们自己所不明白的真理。
    也有些人的心里隐存着真理,他们却不用言语来诉说。
在这些人的胸怀中,心灵居住在有韵调的寂静里。

    当你在道旁或市场遇见你朋友的时候,让你的心灵,运用你的嘴唇,指引你的舌头。
    让你声音里的声音,对他耳朵的耳朵说话:
    因为他的灵魂要噙住你心中的真理。

You would measure time the measureless and the immeasurable.
你想衡量无穷又不可测的时间。

You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons.
你想依照时辰与季节来调整你的行为,甚而引导你的灵魂之路。

Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing.
你想筑一条时间的小溪,坐在岸边,看它流淌。


Yet the timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness,
And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream.
然而,你心中的永恒明了生命的无限,
并且知道,昨天不过是今天的回忆,而明天是今天的梦想。

And that that which sings and contemplates in you is still dwelling within the bounds of that first moment which scattered the stars into space.
那在你身体里歌唱并沉思的,仍然与群星逸入宇宙的初始时刻并存。

Who among you does not feel that his power to love is boundless?
你们当中,有谁不感到他的爱力浩瀚无边呢?

And yet who does not feel that very love, though boundless, encompassed within the centre of his being, and moving not form love thought to love thought, nor from love deeds to other love deeds?
谁没有感受到那种爱呢? 爱虽然无边无际,却围绕在他的四周,既不在爱的意念里朝三暮四,也不在爱的行为里见异思迁。

And is not time even as love is, undivided and paceless?
时间不正如爱一样吗?既不可分割,也无快慢可言。

But if in your  thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons,
And let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing.
但倘若在你的思想里必须以四季来衡量时间,那么就让每个季节蕴含其它的季节,
让今天以回忆拥抱过去,以渴望投身未来。

    他回答说:
    你要测量那不可量、不能量的时间。
    你要按照时辰与季候来调节你的举止,引导你的精神。
你要把时光当做一条溪水,您要坐在岸旁,看它流逝。

    但那在你里面无时间性的我,却觉悟到生命的无穷。
    也知道昨日只是今日的回忆,而明日只是今日的梦想。
    那在你里面歌唱着、默想着的,仍住在那第一刻在太空散布群星的圈子里。
    你们中间谁不感到他的爱的能力是无穷的呢?
    又有谁不感到那爱虽是无穷,却是在他本身的中心绕行,不是从这爱的思念移到那爱的思念,也不是从这爱的行为移到那爱的行为么?
而且时光岂不是也象爱,是不可分析,没有罅隙的么?

    但若是在你的意想里,你定要把时光分成季候,那就让每一季候围绕住其他的季候。
也让今日用回忆拥抱着过去,用希望拥抱着将来。

And he answered:
他答道:

Of the good in you I can speak, but not of the evil.
我可以谈谈你们心中的善,但却不能谈恶。

For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst?
因为, 恶为何物? 它不正是善饱受自身饥渴的折磨而造成的吗?

Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts, it drinks even of dead waters.
事实上,当饥饿不堪时,善甚至到黑暗的洞穴里寻找食物;而当口干舌燥时,它甚至去饮死水。

You are good when you are one with yourself.
当你与自己一致时,你是善良的。

Yet when you are not one with yourself you are not evil.
而当你与自己不协调时,你也不邪恶。

For a divided house is not a den of thieves; it is only a divided house.
因为,一个分裂的家并非贼窝;只不过是个分裂的家罢了。

And a ship without rudder may wander aimlessly among perilous isles yet sink not to the bottom.
一只无舵的船在险恶的岛屿间漫无目的地漂游,但还不至于沉入水底。

You are good when you strive to give of yourself.
当你尽力付出你自己时,你是善良的。

Yet you are not evil when you seek gain for yourself.
而当你为自己谋取利益时,你也并非邪恶。

For when you strive for gain you are but a root that clings to the earth and sucks at her breast.
因为,当你竭力获益时,你不过是树根,依附大地的胸脯,吮吸她的乳汁。

Surely the fruit cannot say to the root, "Be like me, ripe and full and ever giving of your abundance."
果实当然不能告诉树根,“学我吧,成熟,饱满,永远奉献你的富庶。”

For to the fruit giving is a need, as receiving is a need to the root.
因为,对于果实,奉献是种需求;而对于树根,接受则是需求。

You are good when you are fully awake in your speech,
Yet you are not evil when you sleep while your tongue staggers without purpose.
当你谈吐完全清醒时,你是善良的,
而当你睡着时,你的舌头毫无意识地胡言癔语时,你也并非邪恶。

And even stumbling speech may strengthen a weak tongue.
即使结结巴巴的言辞也会强化软弱的舌头。

You are good when you walk to your goal firmly and with bold steps.

Yet you are not evil when you go thither limping.
而当你跛足而行时,你也并非邪恶。

Even those who limp go not backward.

But you who are strong and swift, see that you do not limp before the lame, deeming it kindness.

You are good in countless ways, and you are not evil when you are not good,
You are only loitering and sluggard.

Pity that the stags cannot teach swiftness to the turtles.

In your longing for your giant self lies your goodness: and that longing is in all of you.

But in some of you that longing is a torrent rushing with might to the sea, carrying the secrets of the hillsides and the songs of the forest.

And in others it is a flat stream that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore.

But let not him who longs much say to him who longs little, "Wherefore are you slow and halting?"

For the truly good ask not the naked, "Where is your garment?" nor the houseless, "What has befallen your house?"

    我能谈你们的善性,却不能谈你们的恶性。
    因为,什么是“恶”,不只是“善”被他自身的饥渴所困苦么?
的确,在“善”饥饿的时候,他肯向黑洞中览食,渴的时候,他也肯喝死水。

    当你与自己合一的时候便是“善”。
    当你不与自己合一的时候,却也不是“恶”。
    因为一个隔断的院宇,不是贼窝,只不过是个隔断的院宇。
    一只船失了舵,许会在礁岛间无目的地飘荡而却不至于沉到海底。
    当你努力要牺牲自己的时候便是“善”。
    当你想法自利的时候,却也不是“恶”。
    因为当你设法自利的时候,你不过是土里的树根,在大地的胸怀中啜吸。
    果实自然不能对树根说:“你要像我,丰满成熟,永远贡献出你最丰满的一部分。”
    因为,在果实,贡献是必需的,正如吸收是树根所必需的一样。
    当你在言谈中完全清醒的时候,你是“善”的。
    当你在睡梦中,舌头无意识地摆动的时候,却也不是“恶”。
连那失错的言语,有时也能激动柔弱的舌头。

    当你勇敢地走向目标的时候,你是“善”的。
    你颠顿而行,却也不是“恶”。
    连那些跛者,也不倒行。
但你们这些勇健而迅速的人,要警醒,不要在跛者面前颠顿,还自以为仁慈。

    在无数的事上,你是“善”的;在你不善的时候,你也不是“恶”的。
    你只是流连,荒亡。
    可怜那糜鹿不能教给龟鳖快跑。
    在你冀求你的“大我”的时候,便隐存着你的善性:
    这种冀求是你们每人心中都有的。
    但是对于有的人,这种冀求是奔越归海的急湍,挟带着山野的神秘与林木的讴歌。
    在其他的人,是在转弯曲折中迷途的缓流的溪水,在归海的路上滞留。
    但是不要让那些冀求深的人,对冀求浅的人说:“你为什么这般迟钝?”
    因为那真善的人,不问赤裸的人:“你的衣服在那里?”也不问那无家的人:“你的房子
怎样了?”

And he answered, saying:

You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might pray also in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.
你只在愁苦和需求时才祷告;但愿你在满心欢喜和日子富裕时也祷告。

For what is prayer but the expansion of yourself into the living ether?
因为,祷告不就是你自身向生活太空的扩展吗?

And if it is for your comfort to pour your darkness into space, it is also for your delight to pour forth the dawning of your heart.
倘若放飞你的黑暗会令你舒心,那么,倾吐你内心的拂晓,也会令你愉悦。

And if you cannot but weep when your soul summons you to prayer, she should spur you again and yet again, though weeping, until you shall come laughing.
如果你的灵魂召唤你祷告时,你只是哭泣,那么,尽管你啜泣,她应当一再催促你,直到你展露笑颜。

When you pray you rise to meet in the air those who are praying at that very hour, and whom save in prayer you may not meet.

Therefore let your visit to that temple invisible be for naught but ecstasy and sweet communion.

And if you should enter into it to humble yourself you shall not be lifted:

Or even if you should enter into it to beg for the good of others you shall not be heard.
即使你们是为了别人而进去祈求,神也听不见你们。

It is enough that you enter the temple invisible.
你们只需跨入无形的神殿,就足够了。

I cannot teach you how to pray in words.
我不能够教你们如何用言语祈祷。

God listens not to your words save when He Himself utters them through your lips.
神听不见你们的话, 除非他本人借你们的双唇说出那些话。

And I cannot teach you the prayer of the seas and the forests and the mountains.
我无法教给你们大海,森林,以及群山的祷告。

But you who are born of the mountains and the forests and the seas can find their prayer in your heart,
但是, 你们既诞生于高山森林和大海,就能够在心里找到它们的祷告,

And if you but listen in the stillness of the night you shall hear them saying in silence,
如果你们在静夜里聆听, 你们将听见它们沉默的言语,

"Our God, who art our winged self, it is thy will in us that willeth.
“我们的神啊,你是我们长了羽翼的化身,你的愿望就是我们心里的愿望。

It is thy desire in us that desireth.

    于是一个女冠说,先知请给我们谈祈祷。

    他回答说:

你们总在悲痛或需要的时候祈祷,我愿你们也在完满的欢乐中和丰富的日子里祈祷。

    因为祈祷不就是你们的自我在活的以太中的开展么?

    假若向太空倾吐出你们心中的黑夜是个安慰,那么倾吐出你们心中的晓光也是个欢乐。

    假若在你的灵魂命令你祈祷的时候,你只会哭泣,她也要从你的哭泣中反复地鼓励你,直到你笑悦为止。

    在你祈祷的时候,你超凡高举,在空中你遇到了那些和你在同一时辰祈祷的人,那些除了祈祷时辰之外你不会遇到的人。

    那么,让你那冥冥的殿宇的朝拜,只算个欢乐和甜柔的聚会罢。

    因为假如你进入殿宇,除了请求之外,没有别的目的,你将不能接受。

    假如你进入殿宇,只为要卑屈自己,你也并不被提高。

    甚至于你进入殿宇,只为他人求福,你也不被嘉纳。

只要你进到了那冥冥的殿宇,这就够了。



    我不能教给你们怎样用言语祈祷。

    除了它通过你的嘴唇所说的它自己的言语之外,上帝不会垂听你的言语。

    而且我也不能传授给你那大海、丛林和群山的祈祷。

    但是你们生长在群山、丛林和大海之中的人,能在你们心中默会它们的祈祷。

    假如你在夜的肃默中倾听,你会听见它们在严静中说:

    “我们自己的‘高我’的上帝,您的意志就是我们的意志。

    您的愿望就是我们的愿望。

    您的神力将您赐给我们的黑夜转为白日。

    我们不能向您祈求什么,因为在我们动念之前,您已知道了我们的需要。

我给您的是我们的需要。在您把自己多赐予我们的时候,您把一切都赐予我们了。”

Pleasure is a freedom song,
But it is not freedom.
It is the blossoming of your desires,
But it is not their fruit.

It is a depth calling unto a height,
But it is not the deep nor the high.
It is the caged taking wing,

Yet if it comforts them to regret, let them be comforted.

And there are among you those who are neither young to seek nor old to remember;
And in their fear of seeking and remembering they shun all pleasures, lest they neglect the spirit or offend against it.

你们当中有些人, 既不是有追求的年轻人, 也不是怀旧的长者;
因为惧怕追求与回忆,他们躲避一切快乐,免得轻视或冒犯灵魂。

But even in their foregoing is their pleasure.

And thus they too find a treasure though they dig for roots with quivering hands.

But tell me, who is he that can offend the spirit?

Shall the nightingale offend the stillness of the night, or the firefly the stars?

And shall your flame or your smoke burden the wind?

Think you the spirit is a still pool which you can trouble with a staff?

Oftentimes in denying yourself pleasure you do but store the desire in the recesses of your being.

Who knows but that which seems omitted today, waits for tomorrow?

谁又知道,今天看似被疏忽的,不会在明天守候呢?

Even your body knows its heritage and its rightful need and will not be deceived.

就连你们的身体也知道自身的天性与合理的需求,因而不会受骗。

And your body is the harp of your soul,
And it is yours to bring forth sweet music from it or confused sounds.

And now you ask in your heart, "How shall we distinguish that which is good in pleasure from that which is not good?"

    于是有个每年进城一次的隐士,走上前来说:先知请给我们谈谈快乐。

    他回答说:快乐是一阕自由的歌,却不是自由。

    是你的愿望开出的花朵,却不是结下的果实。

    是从深处到高处的招呼,却不是深,也不是高。

    是关闭在笼中的翅翼,却不是被围绕住的太空。

    噫,实话说,快乐只是一阕自由的歌。

    我愿意你们全心全意地歌唱,我却不愿你们在歌唱中迷恋。

    你们中间有些年轻的人,寻求快乐,似乎这便是世上的一切。他们已被裁判、被谴责了。

    我不要裁判、谴责他们,我要他们去寻求。

因为他们必会找到快乐,但不止找到她一个人;

    宗教岂不是一切的功德,一切的反省。

    以及那不是功德,也不是反省,只是在凿石或织布时灵魂中永远涌溢的一种叹异,一阵惊讶么?

    谁能把他的信心和行为分开,把他的信仰和事业分开呢?

    谁能把时间展现在面前,说“这时间是为上帝的,那时间是为我自己的;这时间是为我灵魂的,那时间是为我肉体的”呢?

    你的一切光阴都是那在太空中鼓动的翅翼,从自我飞到自我。

    那穿上道德只如同穿上他的最美的衣服的人,还不如赤裸着,太阳和风不会把他的皮肤裂成洞孔。

    把他的举止范定在伦理之内,是把善鸣之鸟囚在笼里。

    最自由的歌声,不是从竹木弦线上发出的。

    那以礼拜为窗户的人,开启而又关上,他还没有探访到他心灵之宫,那里的窗户是天天开启的。

    你的日常生活,就是你的殿宇,你的宗教。

    何时你进去,把你的一切都带了去。

    带着犁耙和铁炉,木槌和琵琶,这些你为着需要或怡情而制造的物件。

    因为在梦幻中,你不能超升到比你的成就还高,也不至于坠落到比你的失败还低。

    你也要把一切的人都带着:

因为在钦慕上,你不能飞跃得比他们的希望还高,也不能卑屈得比他们的失望还低。



    假如你要认识上帝,就不要做一个解谜的人。

    不如举目四望,你将看见他同你的孩子们游戏。

    也观望太空;你将看见他在云中行走,在电中伸臂,在雨中降临。

你将看见他在花中微笑,在树中举手挥动着。
